Laser hair removal – when you’re tired of shaving, plucking, and waxing

By Deepa C. Lingam, MD

Many women dream of saying goodbye to unwanted hair, yet they aren’t sure if laser hair removal is right for them. And this is probably because they have so many unanswered questions: is it really permanent, what areas does it work on, what are the side effects, and the jackpot question – is it worth the cost?

In order to know if laser hair removal is right for you, you need the full picture. So below, I’ve laid out some things you should consider before you make your final decision.

Laser Hair Removal: Is it permanent?

It’s extremely important to understand that these treatments provide permanent hair reduction – not permanent hair removal. This means that the hair will become finer, and you’re going to get a great reduction in growth. Now, there will always be a little bit of regrowth that requires maintenance treatments once or twice a year depending on your individual needs, but the vast majority of patients are extremely happy with the results and thrilled to finally be done with shaving and waxing.

Areas That Are Good/Bad for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has shown to work best on the bikini area, underarms, and legs as well as parts of the face such as the upper lip and chin area. Just keep in mind that it won’t treat gray or white hairs, nor peach fuzz on the face, and of course, anywhere around the eyes is a big no-no due to the chance of severe eye damage.

Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal

There may be some slight discomfort, redness and/or swelling right after each treatment, but this usually goes away within a few hours and isn’t a cause for concern. And while it’s considered extremely safe, I always make my patients aware of any long-term side effects that have been reported in medical literature.

I will also note that because of the complications that can occur, I would never treat a patient with a tan. When we do laser hair removal, the laser targets pigment in the hair follicle and the goal is for the hair follicle to be the target – not the tanned skin. If you have a tan while getting laser hair removal, you could experience blistering and white patches. Just be sure to lose your tan before coming in for your appointment.

Is laser hair removal worth the cost?

The cost of laser hair removal is given at the time of the consultation and greatly depends on the area we’re treating. But I have many, many patients who are extremely pleased with the results and will tell you that it’s worth every penny to get rid of that unwanted hair that you’ve been dealing with for so long.

If you’re tired of endless shaving, painful plucking, and excruciating waxing, trust me – you’re going to love the results laser hair removal can give you!
